From Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles, the ultimate show-stopping doo-wop group inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame, to Labelle, the groundbreaking glam funk band known for the No. 1 single “Lady Marmalade” (“Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi Ce Soir?”), and through a stunning solo career that has spawned hits like “Busting Out,” “I Sweat (Going Through the Motions),” and “Transformation,” Nona Hendryx has always been on the cutting edge of music. Her collaborations in the music industry range from the Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Material, Prince, and Peter Gabriel to Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz, and many others.
After her award-winning stint with Labelle, which included albums like Moon Shadow (1972), Pressure Cookin’ (1973), and the smash hit Nightbirds (1975), Hendryx began her solo career with surprisingly little fanfare. Her eponymous debut solo effort, for all its quality, failed to achieve notable success when it came out in 1977. With the release of Nona (1983), however, audiences began to take notice, and her solo career took flight with albums like The Heat (1985), Female Trouble (1987), Skin Diver (1989), and You Have to Cry Sometime (1992).
Hendryx hasn’t released a full-length original solo album since her 1992 release. That’s all about to change in 2012. The singer’s latest album, Mutatis Mutandis (Latin for “the necessary changes having been made”), is set to be released this summer in the U.S. on Righteous Babe Records. A quirky and political musical tour de force, the disc provides strong commentary on current issues like the Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh, and Enron. These blunt political overtones don’t blunt Hendryx’s vocals, though – they remain as soulful and raw as ever, soaring over a funky blend of blues and rock. Join Hendryx tonight at B.B. King Blues Club as she celebrates the U.S. release of this potent album.
