For the past decade Happily Natural Day has been dedicated to cultivating the community in promotion of holistic health and wellness, cultural identity and social change. In 2012, we embarked on the next leg of our journey in service to our community via the launch of McDonough Community Garden.
After working in partnership with Salim Farms at the Richmond Noir Market for the past 4 years, we came to the realization that we as people living in urban communities throughout the country have to take start regaining control over our food system, particularly if we want to be sovereign over our food supply. Our conversations around health and wellness are moot points if we do not have the capacity to determine how our food is produced. Many of us live in food deserts, or places with limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Many of us have become disconnected to the earth due the mass migrations of our forefathers from rural America to urban cities. Our work at McDonough Community Garden is a step toward reclamation and we are happy to have you walk with us.
